ECO CITIZEN PRACTICES

The SATA Group, town council, Tourism Office and resort professionals have taken steps to reduce the carbon footprint generated by the services linked to tourism and the ski area. You can do the same with your choice of transport, sporting equipment, food and accommodation.

You will be amazed!

Do you know what the average carbon footprint of a day on the slopes is?

If we all make even a small saving, our actions will be multiplied by hundreds of thousands. Together, we have the power!

275 000 riders

That’s how many people visited Les 2 Alpes last winter, whether for one day or a whole week.

1,65 million overnight stay

Discover easy eco-friendly practices you can carry out during your stay. You’ll reduce your energy consumption and your carbon footprint.

A DAY OF RIDING IS 48,9 KG CO2E

A day of riding the slopes is 48,9 kg CO2e!

52%
Transport to get to resort = 25,4 kg CO2e
Transport comprises the biggest carbon footprint of your stay: alternatives are available to lower it.

17%
Local infrastructure = 7.9 kg CO2e
Infrastructure and facilities linked to tourism-based activities.

16%
Sports equipment = 8,5 kg CO2e
This is all the equipment you need for snowsports, and to stay safe and warm.

8%
Food = 4 kg CO2e
By reducing the amount of red meat you eat, and by eating local in line with the seasons, you can reduce your impact by up to 75%.

4%
Accommodation = 1.7 kg CO2e
Whether you stay in an apartment, chalet, or hotel, they all consume energy.

3%
The ski area = 1.4 kg CO2e
This represents the slope maintenance, ski lifts and everything that gives you the pleasure of riding.

All about...

#1 - Getting around

Transport represents more than half of the energy consumed during a day on the slopes.
Alternatives are available to reduce that amount.

TO GET AROUND THE RESORT

Opt for public transport

TRAIN
Prefer the train from Grenoble train station. This is the least polluting form of transport, and the most efficient.

PLANE
Trains use 65 times less CO 2e than planes.

CAR
Travelling by train produces up to 26 times less CO2e than travelling by car.

IN THE RESORT

Go green

BRING YOUR SNOW BOOTS
The avenue that runs across the resort is 2km long and all the tourism activities are located here. For short trips, put your snow boots on!

SHUTTLE BUS
The municipality runs a free shuttle bus service with no CO2e emissions.

NEED TO TAKE YOUR CAR?

Carshare!

ECO-FRIENDLY DRIVING
Divide the carbon footprint of your car by the number of passengers.
You can save up to 15% of your fuel, while also reducing your chances of having an accident.

#2 - Sports equipment

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY
2 tips to help

  1. Rent your equipment in the resort shops.
  2. Buy quality equipment that will last much longer.

#3 - Tourist accommodation

Every little action helps to reduce your energyconsumption, and it’s easy to do.
Energy consumption of tourist accommodation corresponds to 4% of the carbon footprint of a day on the slopes. Washing your hands with cold water, lowering the heating by a degree, or closing the shutters at night… all help lower energy consumption.

Set your hot water to 55-60°C
This is the perfect temperature for your hot water tank tank. It reduces the risk of getting burned and prevents bacteria from developing, all while saving energy.

19°C is a lovely temperature
It’s the best room temperature. If you feel a bit chilly, just put on a scarf or an extra jumper.

16-19°C for restorative sleep
At night-time, lower temperatures help promote an excellent quality of sleep. Give it a go, and you’ll be in fine form to hit the slopes in the morning.

Switch to eco mode
Only turn your dishwasher or washing machine on when they are full. Short cycles and low temperatures wash efficiently, whilst saving energy.

Keep the heat inside
Two top tips for saving up to 30% of your heating: close the shutters and curtains at night. Try not to open windows and exterior doors, and when you want to let some air in, make sure you lower the heating.

The beneficial effects of cold water
When you only need a small amount of water, like to clean your teeth or your hands, use cold water. You’ll save water heated by the hot water tank.

Lights off! And standby off too!
If you’re not in a room anymore, switch off the light. Don’t forget that appliances in standby mode are constantly using energy.

Have a shower rather than a bath
By having a shower, you save water and energy. A 5-minute shower uses 3 to 4 times less hot water than a bath.

Mountains that are as white as snow

#5 - Rubbish

Rubbish thrown into nature makes refuse collection harder and is also harmful to the environment. Remember the three habits to adopt to keep our mountains clean.

Did you know?

Cigarette butts are one of the most common types of litter in the mountains.

  • 1 cigarette butt pollutes 1m3 of snow or 500L of water
  • a cigarette end takes 1 to 5 years to disappear

DO A GREEN GESTURE FOR THE PLANET

  • Put cigarette butts in the bin or in a pocket ashtray.
According to the Mountain Riders association, around 7,000 cigarette butts are found every day, underneath a chairlift!
  • Take your leftovers home with you.
In 2020, the equivalent of 5 tankers, or 7.5 tons of waste was thrown into nature on average in a ski resort. If you picnic on the slopes, don’t forget to take your leftovers home with you.
  • Bins for household waste, recyclables, compostables and glass.
The Communauté de communes de l’Oisans and Les 2 Alpes town council have installed
bins and 20 composting points to sort waste. By composting, you can reduce the contents of
your bin by 20% to 30%.
